After eight months of intensive collaboration, the CleanCloud CHOPIN campaign has officially come to a close – running from September 27, 2024 to June 3, 2025. What started as an ambitious mission to better understand aerosol-cloud interactions became a true scientific journey navigating weather and terrain.

Hosted by NCSR Demokritos at the Helmos Hellenic Atmospheric Aerosol & Climate Change Station and by FORTH/EPFL at the Kalavryta Ski Center, CHOPIN brought together researchers from 20+ institutions across Europe under the umbrella of the CleanCloud project (funded by Horizon Europe).

🌦️ From heat waves to dust storms, and through rain, sleet and snow, our teams endured every element to observe and analyze how aerosols and clouds interact, evolve, and affect our weather and climate. With a unique synergy of in-situ measurements, remote sensing, and modeling, CHOPIN aimed to refine and develop our algorithms for observation, and deepen our understanding of mixed-phase clouds – which play such a crucial role in our weather and climate systems.

CHOPIN was more than an experiment. It was a collective dream and effort to push the boundaries of atmospheric science, with the purpose of providing insights, data and parameterizations that will improve the CleanCloud and other climate models, and, ultimately, a better-informed path toward protecting our planet.

🌄 Because science, at its best, is a universal language that unites us all - like music - and helps us preserve what matters most, our planet with its amazing beauty, nature and sunsets.
